Your Guide To Working Out With Weed In California
Guide by Kate Ryan

A little weed, a little sunshine, and you've got a recipe for a top-shelf workout.

The first time I ever worked out while stoned was an accident. An hour after eating an edible I'd forgotten I'd taken, I found myself suddenly enjoying the hell out of my treadmill routine. My body was elastic, my mind zeroed in on the Fixer Upper episode in front of me, and I marched along like that for a full hour, barely breaking a sweat.

Weed makes working out fun for all the same reasons it makes all kinds of activities more enjoyable. Uplifting head highs take the tedium out of repetitive actions while energetic body highs obliterate minor irritations. It doesn't hurt that the plant’s two most abundant compounds, THC and CBD, have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, helping you recover from your workout once you're done. Word to the wise: cannabis may just revolutionize your cardio routine, but I'd advise against combining weed with heavy weights or complicated machinery. Safety first, my friends.

After countless hours spent hiking, jogging, stair-stepping, and SoulCycling, these are the products the Proper Cannabis Committee (PCC) deemed the best for active days.

Before Your Workout

Kiva's Sparkling Pear Camino Gummies are the best thing to happen to my workouts since the iPod. Between the soothing body high and barely-there head high, these help me push past boredom and mild discomfort to get the most out my gym time. Another rater can attest to that, writing in her review, "Before I knew it, I was bouncing up and down on the treadmill like a big goofy dog."

When I need a little extra motivation to get moving, Kiva's Espresso Bean Terra Bites always do the trick. The 5mg of THC plus an espresso bean in each chocolate-covered bite deliver a balanced yet upbeat high that can turn around the laziest of days. One rater relied on these to keep her energized yet calm on her wedding day, so you can imagine what they do for a pilates class.

During Your Workout

Sunday Goods' Spark all-in-one vape pen delivers a boost of energetic focus with each pull. The sleek and discreet design makes this pen a good pick for crowded hikes and/or country club sports (croquet anyone?). The vapor is herbal in flavor and deliciously smooth, but a couple hits are all you need to feel a renewed interest in your activity of choice.

Jetty Extracts' Maui Wowie PAX Era Pod adds a dash of euphoria to just about any occasion, but it pairs supremely well with the endorphins you get from exercise. I'm not much of a morning person, but I imagine the clean comedown and boost of focus would make this pen a great option for 7am spin classes.

After a few hits of Brite Labs' 10:1 CBD Ringo's Gift Cartridge, you can expect a burst of energy that slowly tapers into calm comfort. Because this cartridge contains 5% THC and 53% CBD, you're not likely to notice a high so much as an absence of irritation. If you're curious but skeptical of pot's workout-enhancing abilities, this is the product to start with. Get it delivered via Parcel.

After Your Workout

Apothecanna's Extra Strength Relieving Body Creme smells like sweet mint gum, moisturizes your skin without leaving behind any oily residue, and relieves surface-level aches and pains. As far as weedy lotions go, this one is a true multi-tasker. Surfers take note: it can help soothe sunburns, too.

Despite having a hefty price tag ($90 for 1oz), Aponi’s Balm 160 has all the qualities athletes look for in a balm: a smooth texture, good absorption, and immediate relief. This balm was so effective, rater Norma Kwee carried it to the top of Mt. Whitney. As she wrote in her review, “My body felt great even after the first seven-mile leg of our hike.”

Any recovery-mode list would be incomplete without a topical from Papa & Barkley. Known for crafting potent and effective full-spectrum products, active weed connoisseurs love their 1:3 CBD:THC Releaf Balm because a little bit goes a long way. With a strong smell of eucalyptus, it may help clear out your sinuses, too. Massage into sore muscles for near-instant relief.
