Cultivar, which stems from the term “cultivated variety,” is essentially another word for strain. The distinction is that cultivar recognizes the subtle differences between batches of plants while strain implies each batch of a particular variety is essentially the same. Think of it this way: a golden retriever is a strain of dog whereas a cultivar is a particular litter of golden retrievers.
