Expert Review
Salt That Provides Calm In Addition To Flavor
Review by Kait Heacock

With a subtle body high and calm head high, this weedy seasoning salt was everything I needed during an emotional road trip.
A cannabis edible review is probably the last place you’d expect to find a deeply personal talk about death, but the truth is my cannabis consumption, appreciation, and advocacy is partly tied up in losing a sibling to the opioid epidemic. That happened in 2013, and almost six years later, here I am testing cannabis products because I enjoy them and believe they are a much healthier alternative to alcohol and other drugs. In the case of Left-Handed Brand’s THC-infused seasoning salt, it’s also a great option for enjoying a light high while spicing up your dish. I used the THC-infused seasoning salt twice while staying with my parents the week we went to visit my brother’s grave.
“Considering the destination, I felt at ease as I looked at the passing trees and listened to music.”
It would have been his 39th birthday. Spending time with my family thinking of what could’ve been had he chosen cannabis for post-surgery pain relief instead of opiates felt a little like pouring salt on my wounds. So instead, I poured it on my food. My first session with this salt, I used it to mix in some flavor and balance the butter and oils in a heavy crab dish. The second time around, I sprinkled some into a bag of salted mixed nuts. One packet contains 10mg of THC, which is a good amount for someone like me with a high tolerance.
The packet was made up of salt, sugar, paprika, garlic powder, and onion. The paprika gave it a fiery kick and the garlic gave it a nice added depth of tangy flavor. I took the bag of nuts with me on the road the day we drove two hours to visit my brother’s grave. My parents have a tradition of visiting it on his birthday and the day he died. The road there wound almost completely through the snow-covered mountains that separate Eastern and Western Washington. Considering the destination, I felt at ease as I looked at the passing trees and listened to music.
Most of the high took place while I traveled with my parents and enjoyed the early spring scenery out the window. This product delivered a mild high that I mostly felt in the body, making it perfect for daytime use. I felt physically relaxed and peaceful while I chatted with my parents about their retirement plans. Overall, the day felt sad but also like a regular part of our lives now, with grief and loss folded into conversations about the future during an otherwise easy-going car trip. Despite the point of our trip, we still laughed and joked. That wasn’t just because the weed gave me a joyful feeling; it was because we’ve learned after many years that happiness exists in balance with sadness.
“The weedy salt was perfect for zoning out on a long car trip because it was relaxing and quieting.”
The high sat comfortably in the background during the whole drive, past lakes and small mountain towns. It made me feel better about the circumstances of the day without clouding my thoughts or abilities. I like cannabis for that reason; it never numbs me to my feelings, only softens the edges of them so I can better handle the negative ones. Plus, the benefit of an edible (besides not making my dad’s car smell like skunk) was that the high was contained in my body. I could feel physically soothed and restful without being totally removed from important bonding time with my family.
By the end of the long drive with my parents, the high had worn off. I felt sleepy from sitting in the car for so long. The weedy salt was perfect for zoning out on a long car trip because it was relaxing and quieting. When we arrived at our somber destination, I took a deep breath and walked to the grave. I felt positive in the face of sadness and at peace with those circumstances that were out of my control. I have myself and my family but also cannabis to thank for that.
