This bar from P&B Kitchen offers a sweet and subtle high everyone should try.
In Review: Papa & Barkley’s new
Everyone knows the old cliche that emotional PMSing women just need some chocolate. Well there’s growing proof that that cocoa craving may actually be scientifically sound. Studies show that the compounds in dark chocolate can raise your mood by increasing dopamine production, its high polyphenol content can help reduce inflammation, and it may even help ease menstrual cramps due to its high magnesium content (which aids muscle relaxation). Add a little THC into the mix, and you have yourself a powerful, period-fighting chemical combo.
Cannabis has been used to help ease painful menstrual symptoms by women in many different cultures throughout history, perhaps most famously by Queen Victoria. Though there haven’t been any formal studies to assess weed's effectiveness for cramp relief (damn you, patriarchal science), THC has been shown to relieve inflammation and help with pain as both an analgesic (general painkiller) and antinociceptive (which stop nerves from sensing pain signals). With both chocolate and THC inside, the Cannabis Infused Raspberry Quinoa Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar from P&B Kitchen has everything you need to get yourself through your own Victorian period.
“I was delighted with the smell of warm cocoa, just like the inside of a fancy chocolatier shop.”
P&B Kitchen is the brand-spanking new edible division of the long-trusted cannabis & hemp brand, Papa & Barkley. They have taken their time releasing edibles, and it really shows in the care they've taken to do it right. They make their chocolate in small batches, and when I opened it up I was delighted with the smell of warm cocoa, just like the inside of a fancy chocolatier shop. There was also a light sweet waft of cream and raspberry, creating a delicious aroma that made my mouth water.
The feel was so rich and creamy I almost thought I accidentally got milk chocolate instead. It melted in my mouth, but was dotted with little crunchy flecks of popped quinoa and bright fruity pops of dried raspberries. It’s also Fair-Trade Certified, which makes this like the best take on a Malibu-version of a Krackle bar.
It was decadent without being overly sweet, with that light after-note of bitterness dark chocolate has that sets apart mature, grown-up cocoa from cheap kids’ candy. Since you’re getting all the nutritious benefits of cacao with only 1g of sugar per piece, I think of this more as a health food bar than a dessert.
You can really taste the quality in the chocolate, and you can feel the quality in the cannabis. Their rosin infusion is made completely chemical-free, with no solvents, from top-shelf, all-natural, local, sun-grown flower. With each square measuring at 5mg of THC and 100 mg per bar, it was just low enough that I was able to snack on more than one square at a time while still being able to make one bar last my whole period.
“You can really taste the quality in the chocolate, and you can feel the quality in the cannabis.”
My first day is always my worst day, so I decided to have a few pieces. I was really tryin’ to treat myself, so I paired one with some crispy fried coconut chips I got in a Thai grocery store. I managed to absolutely nail a perfect stoner PMS snack, with all the sweet, savory and salty notes working together to achieve that moment of ultimate mouth bliss. If you’re scared to buy snacks in a foreign language because you might hate it, here’s my tip: buy three options. You’re bound to like at least one. Please, go treat your tongue to this exciting experience.
The body high was very mellow, and great for soothing my aches & pains while I zoned out on the couch with some good Netflix. My body went from being a twisted knot of pain to feeling calm and floaty, like being on a lazy river while laying in my bed. It helped boost my mood too, and had me laughing it up as I binged a whole season of A Black Lady Sketch Show.
I am also quite an accomplished insomniac. I struggle to quell my racing thoughts every night, and with the added fun of cramps and physical discomfort that menstruation brings, it's often one of my worst weeks for sleep. This relaxing high helped me drift off into blissful slumber.
When I woke up in the middle of the night to pee (which I often have to do thanks to my annoying urge to hydrate very late), I was clear-headed enough that I wasn't bumping into things on my way to the bathroom.
“There was no residual grogginess or “highover” weighing me down.”
The cannabis wasn’t overpowering, but I did have enough fumes left in my brain to drift off as soon as my head hit the pillow again, instead of looking at my phone for hours like usual. When I woke up eight hours later, I felt refreshed and bright from my full night's sleep. There was no residual grogginess or “highover” weighing me down.
The high from this chocolate was one of the most magically perfect Sleeping Beauty princess experiences I’ve felt from edibles. The dark chocolate is so scrumptious that I would eat it even if there wasn’t weed inside; but the fact that it's also medicated truly makes it the perfect prescription for PMS relief.
The whole gang of superfood compounds in a delicious yet low-sugar chocolate bar simply makes this Cannabis Infused Raspberry Quinoa Crunch Dark Chocolate Bar from P&B Kitchen my new favorite tool in my period fighting arsenal.
